This afternoon, the Gila Bend Senior Center was bustling with cheer and overflowing with decorations and dozens of close friends to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ms. Margie Lonas, a long-time resident of Gila Bend.
In the 60 or so years that Margie has lived in the Town, she’s spent the last 20 years as a volunteer for the Town’s Senior Center where she basically donated her time for everything from doing the dishes to a position on the Site Council, so it was only fitting that the Senior Center be the venue for honoring the Town’s newest Centenarian!
Donning her birthday tiara and other celebratory baubles, Margie was seated at the front of the room with her daughter, Nancy Perdue, and her granddaughter, Tonia O’Malley, where she was presented with a proclamation from Mayor, Chuck Turner, “urging all citizens to pay special tribute” to her on this special day. She was also the recipient of a State of Arizona Commendation from the Office of the Governor. Following the proclamation and commendation, Mayor Turner played his ukulele and sang Happy Birthday to Margie.
Considered a “character” by her friends, Margie owes her longevity to staying active and living a vivid life. “Family and friends, laughter and joy, singing and dancing.”
Happy Birthday Ms. Margie, and may this next year bring you more laughter and joy, and singing and dancing.
